American Prison Review:
When we connect this to the real-life events of the writer, it all started in 2009 which the writer took a job as an undercover journalist at an entry-level prison. The job was of a guard and even though the experience was a brief one where he only worked for 4 months, this gave him enough insight to write a book or memoir. This not only discusses the experience but also gives groundbreaking information about the private prison system in America and how spoiled it is.
Still, there was much more than he needed to say. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War. For, as he soon realized, we can’t understand the cruelty of our current system and its place in the larger story of mass incarceration without understanding where it came from.
This book by Shane Bauer was received so well that it ended up scoring 4.3 out of 5 on the Good Reads and has mostly positive reviews in its favors. Some reviewers have called it a very important book which reveals a lot about the prison system and the reforms which are required inside.
