Ferris went to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and started working on the novel for her recovery in the year 2010. It took six years for Ferris to create 700 pages of the novel. The novel represents the childhood and growing up of Ferris living in Chicago and portrays her love for deadly monsters and horror media. Working on the novel was very difficult for Ferris because of long working hours and her bad medical condition. The first volume of the novel was published by Fantagraphics on 14^th Feb 2017. The novel won Ignatz Award for Best Graphic novel in the year 2017 and three Eisner Awards in the year 2018. My Favorite Thing is Monsters is nominated for Hugo Award.
