In this novel, Taylor left her home and travel towards the west and went to Oklahoma near the territory of Cherokee. As Taylor went to the town a woman approaches her, and she gave her a small child without any further explanation. Taylor decided to adopt her without any second thought. The novel revolves around the experiences of Taylor and a small child whom she called Turtle. The novel represents the early life of the Turtle with a colourful cast of characters such as Mattie, owner of “ Jesus Is Lord Used Tires”, Estevan and Esperanza, a Guatemalan couple and Lou Ann, Taylor’s roommate.
